But prices vary a lot from one jeweler to the next, and it is not always clear what you are paying for. What drives the price of a lab-grown diamond
1. Carat weight
Price rises faster than weight. A 2 carat diamond usually costs more than twice as much as a 1 carat of the same quality, because larger rough crystals are harder to grow without flaws.
2. Color and clarity
D–F color and VVS clarity cost the most. The good news is that G–H color and VS2 clarity look white and clean to the naked eye once set in a ring, and they cost noticeably less.
3. Cut quality
Cut decides how much the diamond sparkles. An Excellent or Ideal cut costs a little more, but a poorly cut diamond looks dull no matter how good its color and clarity are. This is the one C we recommend never compromising on.
4. Shape
Round brilliants are usually the most expensive shape. Oval, pear, emerald and cushion cuts often cost less per carat and can look larger for their weight.
5. The setting and metal
18K gold costs more than 14K, and platinum more than both. Halo, pavé and three-stone settings add small diamonds and labor, so they cost more than a plain solitaire.
6. Certification

5 ways to get more diamond for your budget
- Buy just under a "magic" weight. A 0.90ct looks almost identical to a 1.00ct but is often priced lower.
- Choose G–H color. Especially in yellow or rose gold, the difference from D–F is very hard to see.
- Go for VS2 clarity. It is usually eye-clean, so paying for VVS or FL buys you something you cannot see.
- Consider an oval or pear. Elongated shapes look bigger than a round of the same carat weight.
- Pick 14K gold. It is more durable for everyday wear and costs less than 18K.
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Honestly, no. Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen over the past few years and resale value is low. That is the trade-off for paying far less up front. If you want a beautiful, real diamond for the price of a much smaller mined one, lab-grown is excellent value. If resale value matters to you, a mined diamond is the better choice.
